What do I need to play Versu?

Versu runs on an iPad 3 or better. While we would like to support Android, we do not currently have an Android version available.

How do I get started?

Select the first chapter and you’ll be presented with a list of characters. Tap Play to start.

From there, it’s up to you to interact with the other characters. At any time during the story, you can tap Act Now to bring up the list of things you can do. Significant actions like saying important remarks or making major decisions will appear near the top of the list. As you scroll down, you’ll find more minor actions as well, such as gestures and emotional responses. Interact in big or small ways, as you like.

The story is controlled via the More and Act Now buttons at the bottom of the page.

What’s the Act Now button?

Whenever you’d like to take action in the story in progress, pressing Act Now will bring up a list of things you can do.

If you decide that you don’t want to do any of those things right away after all, you can always close the menu and instead press More to see what other characters do. As the situation changes, you will receive new options for your character.

What’s the More button?

The More button tells Versu that you’re ready to keep reading, so it should let another character take action right away.

What are the pictures at the bottom?

The pictures represent the characters who are currently in the same room with your character, and the mood they’re in at the moment. If you want to know more about who they are and why they’re in that mood, you can tap them to bring up an explanatory bubble. Sometimes they will have thoughts that your own character isn’t aware of.

What does it mean if the Act Now button is dimmed?

There is more of the story to read before your character will be able to perform an action. Maybe something dramatic just happened that will take several paragraphs to describe.

If you’d like to progress more quickly through reading it, hold More down to progress automatically.

Can I save my place in the game and come back to it later?

Yes. Use the Save button in the upper right.

Can I play again if I get to the end?

Yes! Press the End link that appears and you’ll be taken back to the beginning. You can pick a new character (or the same one over again) and start the game again. Or you can go on to the next part.

Is it possible to get stuck?

No. You should always be able to move forward in the story until you get to an ending.

It is possible to reach an ending that might not be ideal for your character… but that will be the result of decisions you made along the way, and you should have a pretty good idea if you’re headed in that direction. Blood and Laurels is intended to give you lots of choice without lots of challenge.

Do characters remember what happened last time, if I play more than once?

No. If you replay a part you’ve played before, the characters will start again from their original state.

Is there more than one ending to Blood and Laurels?

Yes! There are many ways the story can end. Check out the achievements to see some different possibilities you can unlock.

When can I play Part 2 of Blood and Laurels?

Part 2 will become available after you’ve finished Part 1. The characters will remember how you treated them in Part 1 and will have different characteristics depending on what you’ve done.

If I play Part 1 several times, what does that mean for Part 2?

On the character selection screen for Part 2, pick any combination of relationships you’ve unlocked so far.

If you play Part 1 to several different endings, you may unlock different aspects of the same character — for instance, you might make that character your friend in one playthrough, but your enemy in another. When you start Part 2, you’ll be allowed to pick any character versions you’ve unlocked.

Is the story randomized?

Some elements of the story depend on random chance — for instance, whether a character spills something by accident, or selects one conversation gambit or another, might be the result of randomization.

However, the core elements of the story are consistent, and the outcome depends on your choices and the way you have used the opportunities you’ve had.

Can I play offline?

Yes. Versu works can be played without an internet connection.
